Visit a Farm and Pick Berries

Summer is berry season, from late June to August. Berry picking is a wonderful morning activity for the entire family. Pick early in the day and enjoy berry shortcake for dessert that night. Several local farms allow pick-your-own -- Thunder Beach Berry Farm, GMO-free Birch Farm, and Patch of Blue Blueberries to name a few.

Wish on Shooting Stars Catch the Perseid Meteor shower. This year, the meteors tumble into the atmosphere like falling stars from July 17 to Aug 24. At its peak, August 11-12, you can see up to 60 to 100 meteors per hour shoot across the sky. Grab something to lie on, face northeast and make your wishes.

Play Away a Beach Day Soak up the sunshine. Play in the waves and sand. Chill to the waves or get busy with water games or a search for water angels. Build a sand castle. Afternoon naps happen under umbrellas, with small bodies wrapped in sun-warmed towels. Summer is short, but the days are long. Bring a picnic lunch. Pack the snacks, some sunscreen, a few beach toys. Pick a beach: You are set.

Discover the Wonder of our Local Rocks

Budding geologists and rock lovers will enjoy hunting for the granite and quartz rocks strewn along the shoreline. Pick a favourite colour or shape and make a game of it. With a bit of Mod Podge® or a little spray varnish, you can keep the colour of a favourite rock looking wet, like it was just plucked from the bay.

Marvel at the Nightly Sunset

Enjoy the simple things. Stroll on over to sunset point in Balm Beach and watch the sun sink into the horizon. Most nights, mother nature sets the sky aglow in technicolour. Stop in at Bingham’s General Store along the way and grab a scoop or two of your favorite Kawartha ice cream.

Bike, Walk or Run the Tiny Trail

Hit the trail for a stroll or bike through woodland and farmer fields and over rivers. You never know what you might see on the 23-kilometre Tiny Trail. The off-road, gravel trail is safe for walkers and riders of all ages and is considered moderate difficulty. Get out, and stretch your legs, with any luck the kids will spot white-tail deer, a fox or an owl. You can drive and park at six locations to explore different sections of the trail.
