Summer bay days

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Spend the day playing in the heart of Georgian Bay with these fun summer adventures. Explore 10 ways to play on land and water.

1. Giddy-up on horseback

Mountainview Stables makes it easy for inexperienced riders aged 12 and up to explore the trails and breathtaking vistas of the Blue Mountains. One-hour and two-hour rides available. Book in advance by calling 705-445-8544. Bring closed-toe shoes with a quarter-inch heel. Visit the website for details.

2. Boat and bask in the sun on an island beach

Boating is a big part of life on the bay. Experience life like a local with a Diverse Rentals Private Boat Tour . You’ll cruise to islands and beaches only accessible by boat. Bring layers, sunscreen and a towel. Stock the onboard cooler with your favourite drinks and snacks and you’re all set. Book in advance for your boat tour with up to eight people.

3. Reel in the big one

Imagine the thrill of landing the “big one” your first time fishing. But before you’ll hear the sizzle of fish on the grill, you’ll need to reel it in. Let local guide Kevin help you bring your imagination to life on an OSM Adventure Travel fishing charter.

Kevin’s fishing charters - early morning or before sunset - include boat, tackle, fishing equipment and a guide. Kevin even cleans and dresses your catch for you. You bring the fishing licence, the enthusiasm, and up to eight friends. Fishing licence required for each line in the water. Grab your photo ID, and buy your fishing licence online at select Service Ontario locations, or Canadian Tire at their customer service desk.

4. Paddle blue water

Learn to glide across our blue waters on a stand-up paddle board. Ali Stevens of SUP705 shares her passion for SUP in her introductory class. Rates are $50 per person with a minimum of two people. Contact Alie at staduppaddle705@gmail.com to line up the perfect time and place for your SUP lesson.

5. Go wild with your camera

If you love landscape and wildlife shots, grab your camera or smartphone and head to the Tiny Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area. This wetland oasis is home to more than 250 species of birds, including Ospreys (also known as the fish hawk,) and rare birds like the Least Bittern and the Black Tern. Check online for trail access, canoe launch and site details.

To experience the marsh from the water, rent a kayak. Minimum two-day rental. Ask for a car rack to safely transport the kayak.

6. Blaze a trail

Discover one of nature’s hidden gems as you roam freely across the 2,900 hectares of forested land on the shores of Georgian Bay. Awenda Provincial Park offers 31 kilometers of trails and several beaches to enjoy after a hike.

7. Bike the bay

From Midland to Creemore, the area boasts both road routes and cycling trails to suit most riders. There are more than twenty trails on Georgian Bay that vary in difficulty and distance ⎼ advanced, moderate, and easy. Cycle Simcoe makes it easy to explore a variety of terrains, from lowlands along the shoreline, to the highest part of the Niagara Escarpment.

8. Kayak the wilds of Wye Marsh

Discover a small part of the endless beauty of our planet at the 2,000-hectare wetland of the Wye Marsh. This three-hour Guided Kayak Ecotour goes beyond paths and boardwalks, and into nature the way it was meant to be. Advanced registration required. Book and pay online.

9. Bike, walk or run the Tiny Trail

Hit the trail for a stroll or a bike ride through woodlands and farmers’ fields, and cross over rivers. You never know what you might see on the 23-kilometre Tiny Trail. The off-road , gravel trail is safe for pedestrians and cyclists, and is considered moderate in difficulty. Get out, stretch your legs, and with a little luck, you’ll spot white-tailed deer, foxes, or even owls. Park and start from any of six locations to explore different sections of the trail.

10. Free your “inner” tube rider

Take to the bay for some wet and wild adventures. Pack a cooler of beverages (non-alcoholic), and free your inner adrenaline junkie with a Watersports Cruise with Captain. This by-the-hour experience lets you and up-to seven of your closest friends enjoy an afternoon of tubing, wakeboarding or water skiing. Your captain has you covered - watersport gear, fuel and life vests. Have fun and blow up your IG with great stories.
